Of course nothing is ever finally done until its finalized with good ol' latex-based spray . . . which I won't do until I've had three days to look at it and touch up things as I / if I notice them.
Alright, I'm just going to start by saying that I am actually very proud of this piece. And I don't get proud of my work often. But for this I really buckled down, slowed down and let myself work. I did use a reference, which was printed on a standard sheet of blank computer paper, and blew it up to a drawing that's a little more than 3' by 3'. I do not have link to this reference as it was from a digital booklet purchased off iTunes. However, if you watch the movie, I'm sure you'll see it!
This drawing was done with charcoal, and I think I used my fingers at least 50% of the time, thus staining my right index finger black. I love it when that happens.
This image was acquired using my camera since no scanner was big enough. The flash did wash-out some of the charcoal, but I worked to make this as much like the original as possible! Enjoy!
Now for the serious stuff: My work is not public property! Using, borrowing, cropping, duplicating, selling, reposting or otherwise manipulating this image is strictly forbidden, and violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Please respect me and the twelve-fifteen hours I spent on this. Thank you!
The characters Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett are property of Warner Brothers and Dreamworks Studios.
Info: Time: 12-15 hours Materials Used: Charcoal, eraser, blending stubs, tissue, my fingers. Size: 3' by 3' respectively Music listened to while drawing: The Gutter Twins, The Sweeney Todd Soundtrack, The Screaming Trees
Thank you a bunch for looking! Feel free to comment, and a fav is always appreciated, but I'm not going to push it on you 'cause that's annoying! Any questions just send them my way!
This has been entered in 's villain contest. Wish me luck!
Edit: Holy . . .wow! 75 favorites? I love you guys.
I usually use soft charcoal pencils or sticks. One great tool to use is willow charcoal, which is naturally softer and only gets as dark as about a mid-gray range when blended, and since its so soft, it blends very well. Make sure that you use soft charcoal when blending. Hard, compact charcoal doesn't work very well unless its gobbed on there to make black! Does that help?

One question though, how do you get charcoal to be light and look good at the same time?

I am armed with a kettle, and I am not afraid to use it.
